Blonde guide

Going blonde from dark hair.

Dark hair can go blonde, but rarely in one jump. It lightens through warm stages, from red to orange to yellow, and a toner turns each stage into a wearable shade. Here is the usual route, and how to preview each step on your own photo before you start.

The usual route

Step by step, shade by shade.

Each stage is a look in its own right. Many people stop at caramel or honey; others carry on to beige, light blonde or platinum over several sessions.

What to expect

Before you book.

Sessions

From dark brown to light blonde usually takes more than one appointment, with weeks in between for your hair to recover. From black, or from box dye, expect more.

Warmth

Dark hair shows orange and gold as it lightens. Toner balances it, and it needs refreshing every 6–8 weeks.

Condition

Ask for a strand test and bond-building treatment. Healthy hair lightens more evenly and holds toner better.

Gentler routes

Lighter without the shock.

  • Balayage first. Lighten pieces rather than everything, and build up over visits.
  • Stop at a warm stage. Caramel and honey suit many dark-haired people and need less lightening.
  • Plan the upkeep. Blonde from dark hair means toner, masks and root touch-ups. Budget the time as well as the first appointment.
Questions

Before you book

Can I go from black to blonde in one day?

Rarely safely. Most colourists plan it over several sessions to protect the hair.

Which blonde will suit me?

Golden blondes suit warm undertones, beige and pearl suit cool ones. Try a few on your photo, then read what hair colour suits me.

Will my real colour look like the preview?

Take it as a direction, not a promise. The salon result depends on your current colour, your hair’s condition, the products and your colourist, and the light in your photo changes how a shade reads.

The demo model is an AI-generated photo. Previews show a direction, not a guaranteed salon result.
